Transitioning from Home to Supported Independent Living: A Case Study
The Challenge: For parents of children with disabilities, the future can be a source of anxiety, especially as they age and consider what will happen when they’re no longer around. One family faced this challenge after securing SIL (Supported Independent Living) funding. They initially engaged with a local provider but were dissatisfied, feeling that their child was treated as a cash cow rather than an individual. The standard of support workers was low, and high staff turnover increased the participant’s anxiety. The family, seeking a better option, reached out to us based on a recommendation from a friend whose child we also supported. Their child, who had lived at home for nearly 50 years, needed a safe and supportive environment to transition into independent living.

Our SIL Solution
Finding Suitable Accommodation: We prioritised finding accommodation that balanced independence with proximity to the family. The participant was relocated from Wynnum to Birkdale, a suburb closer to public transport and amenities. The new residence, a spacious four-bedroom home, provided a comfortable and familiar environment.

Customised Support Plan: We worked closely with the family to develop a detailed care plan that catered to the participant’s physical, social, and emotional needs. This included scheduling supports around the participant’s community activities, like volunteering and family visits. We took the time to learn about their favourite meals, activities, and hobbies to create a homey and enjoyable living space.

Stable and Skilled Staff: Recognising the importance of stability, we established a consistent roster of skilled support staff familiar to the participant. This continuity helped reduce anxiety and made the transition smoother.

Funding and Housing Considerations: The participant’s funding covered 1:3 SIL arrangements. Given past negative experiences, we were meticulous in selecting housemates to ensure compatibility and create a harmonious living environment.

Community Integration: We believe that providing a house and support staff is just the beginning. We actively integrate participants into the local community, organising social events such as barbecues, movie nights, discos, and arts and crafts sessions. These activities help build a sense of community and belonging.

Capacity Building: Working with allied health professionals, we implemented strategies to support the participant’s growth and independence. This included personal care routines, cooking skills, and using public transport, enhancing their ability to navigate daily life and social activities.
